Honda Timing Belt Replacement Utah: GT Automotive

GT Auto’s Timing Belt Service: The Most Value For Your Labor Dollar

GT Automotive gives you the most value for your Honda auto repair dollar. When it comes to Honda timing belt replacement in Salt Lake City, we maximize your auto repair investment of labor costs. In a Honda timing belt service, for example, we will save you on total labor costs that involve items like the water pump, front engine seals, drive belt, idlers, and tensioners, along with the timing belt. Seth at GT Automotive in South Jordan, Utah shares in this Honda car repair video the value we deliver in your Honda timing belt repair.

Many Honda engines are interference engines. They do this because they are looking to get a little more performance out of their high compression, small engine design.

In an interference engine the valve opens further into the combustion chamber than a non-interference engine. So, if the timing belt breaks (because of age, or due to the water pump or some other component failure), both the piston (and the valve it strikes), can and will be damaged.
Damage of this nature will result in either major and costly repair, or (worst case) a complete engine replacement.

A malfunctioning water pump can cause the belt to break, which can cause the piston to strike and damage the valve, which results in major engine repair and major dollar signs.

Since the water pump is driven by the timing belt, if you don’t replace the pump now, and if it starts leaking later, you will wind up paying essentially the same labor costs later that you are paying now for timing belt replacement. By getting the water pump replaced at the same time as the timing belt, you will pay little labor cost for the water pump’s replacement.

It is a wise decision not to gamble on a worn out water pump. Just get that water pump replacement done at the same time.

You save on total labor costs of both timing belt and water pump. Remember, the water pump is already removed to replace the timing belt.  So you save on total costs there.

The same principle applies to the cam, crank seals, and belt idler pulleys on the Honda.

We check your motor mounts during timing belt replacement, since they are easily visible and can be serviced and/or replaced if necessary. That way, we maximize the value of labor costs during Honda timing belt replacement service.

GT Automotive can replace your Honda timing belt at the factory recommended mileage intervals. This simple procedure will help to prevent premature engine failure and costly repairs, and can help to ensure that your engine is running efficiently and quietly for a long time.

Honda Timing Belt Replacement Salt Lake City: GT Automotive

Honda Timing Belt Service Salt Lake City

GT Automotive recommends regular Honda timing belt replacement for your Civic, Accord, Element, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey-any Honda car, crossover or SUV. The importance of regularly replacing Honda timing belts needs to be emphasized, because it can directly affect the performance and life of your engine.  Kyle at GT Automotive in South Jordan, Utah shares in this Honda timing belt replacement video the importance of scheduled replacement of your Honda timing belt.

Keeping your Honda well maintained should keep it performing for 250,000-300,000 miles or more. We have many customers who drive Hondas with that much mileage, who will testify to that fact.

The key to keeping your Honda in great condition is regularly scheduled Honda maintenance. Regularly scheduled maintenance pin-points, services, replaces and adjusts key parts of your Honda engine. Honda engineers know in advance these services are required. This is especially important with the timing belt.

(If you are looking to buy a used Honda that is approaching 100,000 miles, or if the Honda is approaching 7 years old, one of the first questions you must ask is; “When was the timing belt replaced?” Ask for proof.)

What Honda Timing Belts Do:

  • The timing belt keeps your car’s crankshaft and camshaft valves opening and shutting in sync with the pistons.
  • It controls the rotation of the camshaft and crankshaft and the opening and closing of the engine’s many valves to allow air and gas in and out, which causes the fuel to ignite in the combustion chamber.
  • During this explosion, the valves push the pistons down.
  • In order for the process to take place, the valves have to open and close at the right time.
  • The valves have to be in the correct position as well as the pistons.
  • The valves open at different times for each cylinder.
  • When the timing belt breaks, the valves, which are very light, will open at the wrong time and hit the larger pistons and cause damage
  • Checking and replacing the belt regularly prevents breakage and serious engine damage and helps you avoid getting stranded on the highway.
  • Timing belts with cracked and/or missing teeth can cause your Honda to idle rough, become sluggish, suffer engine clattering or backfiring.
  • If your Honda timing belt breaks, your engine fails, causing your car to shut down.
  • Because most Hondas are interference engines, having a timing belt break while driving will probably cause the pistons to bend the valves, due to their colliding without the clearance provided by the timing belt movement.
  • Unfortunately, in most cases, there are no obvious signs the timing belt is near the breaking point-it will just break.
  • Changing a timing belt on a Honda Civic, Accord, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot, Element, before it wears out is critical.
  • Damage will occur if the timing belt wears down enough to break while the car is running.
  • Honda recommends the timing belt to be changed every 105,000 miles. But, it’s a good idea to change the timing belt before the car reaches 105,000 miles, because of the potential major engine damage that can result from a broken Honda timing belt.

GT Automotive can replace your Honda timing belt at the factory recommended mileage intervals. This procedure will help to prevent premature engine failure and costly repairs, and can help to ensure that your engine is running efficiently and quietly for a long time.

Honda Auto Repair Salt Lake City: Honda Engine Valve Service

Honda Engine Valve Service Salt Lake City: Extend Engine Life

GT Automotive recommends regular Honda engine valve adjustments services on your Civic, Accord, Element, CR-V, any Honda car, crossover or SUV. Honda The importance of correct Honda engine valve clearances needs to be emphasized, because it can directly affect the performance and life of your engine.  Kyle at GT Automotive in South Jordan, Utah shares in this Honda car repair video the importance of regular adjusting Honda engine valves.

What Honda Engine Valves Do:

  • Engine valves act as the doors to the combustion chamber, allowing fresh mix to flow in during the intake stroke, sealing the chamber during the compression and power strokes and providing an exit for the spent gas during the exhaust stroke.
  • Anytime a valve is closed there needs to be a gas-tight seal between the valve seat located in the cylinder head and the valve face.
  • To ensure that the valve is fully seated, there must be some slight valve clearance (called valve “lash”) between the valve stem and rocker arm or cam.
  • Try to think of it as the relationship between a clutch or throttle cable.
  • As the engine warms to operating temperature the various chunks of steel and alloy inside the engine grow slightly due to thermal expansion.
  • As the valve train components are brought up to running temperature, they expand along with all of the other bits and pieces.
  • If there is insufficient lash between the valve stem and its actuating mechanisms when the engine is cold, there will be even less clearance when the engine is hot.

Honda Engine Valve Design & Service

honda-engine-valves

Honda engines have an overhead cam (short for “camshaft”) design:

  • As the lobe on the camshaft rotates, it moves the rocker arm and opens the valve.
  • In this design there are no lifters or push-rods to dampen movement or flex.
  • This is a much more efficient and durable design compared to an overhead valve design like the ones used in many V-6 and V-8 engines

But, due to certain design factors in these Honda engines, the valves slowly go out of adjustment over time:

  • If the valve clearances are excessive, the efficiency of the engine is reduced, because the valves open later and close earlier than they were designed to.
  • If the valve clearances (“valve lash”) are less than the manufacturer recommends (meaning they are too tight), as the engine warms up, normal heat expansion will not allow the valves to completely close.
  • Incorrect valve lash cannot be heard. (so, do not use the “if I cannot hear it, everything must be OK” test!)

If lash is reduced beyond a reasonable amount, several things occur, all of them unpleasant:

  • First, the valve timing is changed slightly, and this may affect performance, and emission outputs. But there is an added complication:
  • The exhaust valve stays alive because it’s able to transfer a portion of the heat it absorbs from the combustion process directly into the cylinder head, when it’s resting on its seat.
  • As clearance is reduced, the valves spend less time on their seats.
  • This means the exhaust valves have less time to give up its heat.
  • This condition will cause an engine misfire, leading to anything from detonation, pre-ignition and engine overheating, to a warped or burnt valve.
  • Burnt valves and/or burnt valve seats can cause major engine damage.
  • Damage to a valve and valve seat is expensive to repair. That’s the part when an expensive head job is needed.

You might not notice it for a while, because it happens slowly and doesn’t make any unusual noises (whereas other types of cars do make noise when their valves need adjusting). But if you drive the car like that, with the valves misadjusted, eventually one of the valves or valve seats will get burned out, and then you can be in real trouble.

Valve lash is critical. Some Honda engines don’t even make it to 100,000 miles, because the valves were never checked. Burned valves result from insufficient valve lash that is ignored for too long.

Regular Honda Valve Clearance Service

Adjusting valve clearance on your Honda is important:

  • The internal combustion engine is subject to thermal expansion as the temperature rises to 195 degrees.
  • In order for an engine to be efficient and burn the highest percentage of fuel introduced, it must have very tight tolerances.
  • Honda determined exactly how much expansion would take place so that the tolerances would be met at that temperature.
  • Adjusting the valves on your Honda Civic, Accord, CR-V, Element can, in many cases, restore idle quality and performance that has been lost due to engine wear.

GT Automotive can have your Honda valves adjusted at the factory recommended mileage intervals. This simple procedure will help to prevent premature engine failure and costly repairs, and can help to ensure that your engine is running efficiently and quietly for a long time.

Subaru Repair Salt Lake City: 5 Most Common Subaru Repair Problems

Want to know about the common Subaru auto repair problems you may encounter? Tim explains in this Subaru repair video what the 5 most common Subaru repair problems are.

1. Subaru Head Gasket Repairs. The head gasket leaking externally have always been a Subaru repair issue. It i such a common repair that aftermarket Subaru head gaskets are designed better than the original head gaskets.

2. Subaru Double Offset Joint repair (DOJ repair). The protective boot and the DOJ joint are positioned close to the catalytic converter. The heat from the converter tends to dry out and crack the protective boot. This causes the lubricant and grease inside the joint to also dry up, causing the joint to bind up and break.

3. Tires and Brakes wear out faster. Since Subaru is an All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle, the tires and brakes operate as if the vehicle is always in 4 wheel drive. Sharp turns at slow speeds and frequent braking-common to city traffic driving-put an extra strain on your tires and brake system.

4. Timing Belt Replacement. Depending upon your specific make and model year of your Subaru, the timing belt needs to be replaced anywhere between 90,000 and 105,000 miles.
Because the timing belt is:

  • Hidden from your view;
  • Such a long length belt;
  • Operates critical components inside your engine-valves, camshaft, etc.;
  • Also operates your water pump…

…it is critical that your Subaru timing belt be replaced BEFORE it breaks.

5. Spark Plugs (also known as a common tune-up). Subaru spark plugs are hidden away, below your view, and are difficult to access. Spark plugs are scheduled for replacement every 90,000-100,000 miles. But your spark plugs may wear out sooner than scheduled, lowering your gas mileage and engine performance.

Tim invites you to call GT Automotive to discuss your Subaru car repair problems. We have certified, factory trained and experienced Subaru technicians to solve your auto repair problems.

Car Overheating,Overheated Engine Repair Salt Lake City:GT Automotive

An overheated engine can spell trouble on the road for you, which is why knowing the causes of a car overheating can be most valuable. Tim at GT Automotive explains the various causes of engine overheating, and how you can anticipate possible car overheating, as well as avoid expensive bills from overheated engine repairs.

What Causes a Car Engine To Overheat?

1. Low Coolant Level, or No Coolant at all.

2. Coolant Leaks From:

  • Leaking radiator hose or hoses;
  • Leaking Radiator;
  • Leaking or faulty water pump;
  • Faulty Radiator Cap.

3. Air Blockage To Radiator.

4. Broken, Torn, or Faulty Head Gasket.

5. Faulty Electric Fans or Fan Motors.

6. Faulty Thermostat.

Any of the above causes will begin a rise in your instrument panel temperature gauge. Tim suggests you pull over and get professional assistance if your temperature gauge rises to 2/3 or above the meter. Getting one of the above repairs done will cost you less than major engine damage from operating an overheated car or truck.

For regular maintenance, Tim also suggests replacing your anti-freeze or coolant every 30,000 miles (for standard green color anti-freeze), and every 60,000 miles for extended high mileage anti-freeze (red, orange, pink, dark green, purple, or yellow colored coolant).
